Rivera Luque works in a variety of different media including collage, video, sculpture, and drawing. In his most recent series - presented here - the artist has been working in large and small scale collages using found pre-printed materials such as advertisement posters and magazines. In those, the artist scrambles the graphics to reroute their content entirely, giving life to abstract compositions removed of any previous significance but yet symbolically charged.

 

“Media imagery literally changes how people live and behave, and has a huge impact on art as well. It is given so much power and can reshape the collective conscience, making us all captives to the content. The sheer amount of data and images being consumed voluntarily and involuntarily on a daily basis is overwhelming. Through my work, I try to question and scramble the images and codes that assemble our everyday “reality” to form a new aesthetic reality.” —in the words of the artist.

 

Rivera Luque’s work has been shown at el Museo del Barrio, New York; Museo de la Memoria, Santiago, Chile; La Capella, Barcelona; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Santiago, Chile; and Museo de Arte Precolombino e Indígena, Uruguay. He has been recently part of solo and group exhibitions at Galerie Rainboww, New York (2019), Y Gallery, New York (2017), Foundation Hippocrène, Paris (2016), The New School, New York (2014), and Gitana Rosa Gallery, Brooklyn (2012). He is currently in the Studio Residency Program, Panting Space 22 in New York. Additionally, in his practice as a curator, Rivera Luque has organized numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally.
