Alba Lorente’s work is born out of a brutal and destructive experiment capable of producing an image in perfect balance. Her work revisits the destructivism movement that during the 60s claimed the compatibility between the desire to destroy, tear, break, with the pleasure of creating and building. Following the principles of this movement, Lorente bases her artistic practice on the extraction of material. She does it from abrupt gestures that end up forming an image but, above all, a methodology of anthropological understanding.

The pieces selected for this collaboration showcase the variety of Lorente’s practice. In her work, gestures are of vital importance: she is interested in the footprint and how the abstraction created by her ink and graphite works is, in reality, the trace of a process. She often uses gouges, pressure water, tape, hammers, punches, and the force of her hands to create consistency, relief, and movement. The large sculptural installations flood space and those paper pulps with wounds become a symbol of harmony, balance, and rebirth.

Alba Lorente graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Zaragoza (2016) and is currently a Ph.D. student in the Research Program of Contemporary Art at the University of the Basque Country, Bilbao. Her work has been part of numerous exhibitions, highlighting her most recent solo shows: “Damnatio memoriae”, La Puerta Gótica, Pamplona, Spain; “Ater, atra, atrum”, Centro de Arte Tomás y Valiente, Madrid; and ”Ascesis. Desgarro del proceso”, Espacio UM/ES, Murcia, Spain. Lorente was selected to be part of the XVIII Promotion of the Foundation Antonio Gala for Young Creators; she was a finalist in Suburbia Archivo de Artistas 2018-2019; and was awarded the Acquisition Prize in the Visual Arts Contest Hotel Four Seasons Madrid 2018.
